Comprehensive Look at IVC Filter Lawsuits

The public first heard about perils linked with the IVC filters from an NBC News Report. It showed how a woman at high risk for blood clots received an IVC filter but soon doctors found how a piece of the said filter had broken off and pierced her heart. She underwent emergency surgery to remove the part of the metal from the body. Over a five-year period (from 2005-2010), the FDA received 921 adverse event reports concerning the defects of the IVC filters. In a 2010 risk communication, the FDA revealed that there were 328 complaints of device migration, 146 issues of detachment of device components, 70 reports of IVC perforation, and 56 cases of filter fracture.
